# Step 1: Check the prerequisites
IPFire is a very slick operating system and runs on various hardware architectures. However, certain requirements needs to be met to run IPFire. It is important that the hardware that you pick is suitable for the environment you are using IPFire in. This may range from a small router in your home or office that runs on a very small machine to multi-core server appliances with power to serve thousands of users at the same time.
Please check out the [hardware section](../hardware) to find out more about what is recommended in various setups. You may also install IPFire as a [virtual machine](../virtualization).
If you checked all requirements you may go on to the next step: (step2)
